My 9 year old keeps asking for a cell phone because “all my friends have one!” I really find it hard to believe that there are a bunch of 9 year olds running around with cell phones. Or am I wrong?
I just don’t see *why* a 9 year old would need a cell phone! Maybe if they were home alone frequently or had to walk home from school…then they might need one for safety. But just for the heck of it? No way!
I tried telling him that there are plenty of reasons why he doesn’t get things that “all his other friends have” but he doesn’t see it…he just wants what they have.
What about you? Do your kids have a cell phone? What age did they get it? Why did they get it?

My kids didn't get cell phones until they were 13 and in sports. My 9 year old nephew has one which I think is crazy! My brother should have given him a watch instead and taught him to be responsible. I personally feel 9 is too young to have the responsibilty of their own phone.
No way. Mine are always either at school or with me. Maybe once they're running all over the place and I need to keep tabs but that seems years down the road!

I don't think 9 yr olds need their own phone. I agree w/the other posters that once the kids start after school activities a phone is helpful but at 9 they're generally w/an adult if out and about. I can't say for sure when my kids will get one but probably not till the teen years. I'm sure they will ask for one sooner (especially Teresa, I gaurantee it) but there's no need so it's a no brainer.

There is absolutely no need for any child under 13 to have a cellphone! Because no child under 13 should be left without adult supervision.
I tell my 10yr old she can buy herself a phone... as soon as she gets herself a job to pay the bill! Kids are spoiled today, no denying mine are as well. But, you have to draw the line somewhere.
