Friday Fragments 10.31.08

Friday Fragments?

  • Why oh why is there CHRISTMAS stuff out already? Walmart had Halloween on one side and Christmas stuff behind me. Silly!
  • I make my bed everyday. I have to! A bedroom looks so much nicer with a made bed. Even if the rest of the room happens to be trashed.
  • I hate fake people. Please just be yourself and not what you think everyone wants to see. Really! No drama is needed. Thanks.
  • Maddie looked so cute for school today. All decked out in black & orange including a cute spider bow on her headband. It's so fun to dress up girls!
  • I'm having a virtual cookie exchange on Mommay's Mayhem in December. More info coming soon...
  • and lastly...Happy Halloween everyone! What are the little goblins dressing up as?

Throwback Thursday

I laughed my butt off when I got this email from my friend Leanne! And thought it would be perfect for the Neurotic Mom's Throwback Thursday! This is funny....and so darn true kids!
*******************
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning ... uphill BOTH ways

yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!

And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it.....

  • I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet . If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog and find a book about it!!
  • There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!
  • There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!
  • We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
  • We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever!
  • And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
  • When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!
  • Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no on screen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!
  • And we didn't have microwaves; if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove or go build a friggin fire. Imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot.

That's exactly what I'm talking about!
You kids today have got it too easy.
You're spoiled.
You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

Regards,
The over 30 Crowd

Wordless Wednesday 10.29.08

WARNING: Do not click link with children around!

Well not completely wordless today. Here's a picture of my brother's leg when he got into a car accident a few weeks ago. The emergency break pedal went through his shin! He's lucky it didn't do any damage to the leg except for a big nasty cut now that's healing. I don't want to post the picture in case you don't want to see it so click at your own risk! (It's pretty darn gross!)

Warning: Definitely not for the squeemish so don't click on the link if you don't want to see it!

A recipe for Thanksgiving

I got this recipe from my pal Laurie. =)

Here is a turkey recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a
stuffing - imagine that. When I was sent recipe, I thought it was
perfect for people like me, who just are not sure how to tell when
poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out.

BAKED STUFFED TURKEY

6-7 lb. Turkey1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good.)
1 cup uncooked popcorn (ORVILLE REDENBACHER'S LOW FAT)
Salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush turkey well with melted butter
salt, and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in
baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven. Listen for
the popping sounds.

When the turkey's ass blows the oven door open and the turkey flies
across the room, it's done.

He he. Couldn't resist this one! I wonder if anyone has ever *really* tried it!

Friday Fragments 10.23.08

Friday Fragments?
  1. I haven't printed any pictures of 2008 out. They are all uploaded to snapfish but not printed. I'm soooo behind this year.
  2. I'm also really behind on scrapbooking. I need to make the time and get books caught up!
  3. I made homemade mashed potatoes and a homemade breaded boneless chicken breast for dinner Wednesday night. Everyone loved it! That was a nice change!
  4. I really hope it's not freezing around here for Halloween. That will suck!
  5. My mp3 player died. I was going to have dh get me an iPod for Christmas but I need it now for my workouts. Can you recommend one? Please? I have no idea about them!
  6. Had Teacher Conferences this week. Very nice to hear how wonderful my kids are!!
  7. Please give me patience and well behaved kids on Sunday. Dh is going to the Pats game so that means I have to bring Lucas with us to mass and then again to soccer. Not. looking. forward. to. it. at. all.
  8. I don't want winter to come. I don't want to see frost on my pretty flowers.
PS. I really like this picture I took this morning!

A pretty rainbow

Not that I want to be the next Jenni or anything....but here's a pic of what Ms. Maddie did to my feet the other day. She wanted to paint them like "a pretty rainbow". Great. How pretty, huh? Good thing it's winterish around here...no piggies will be showing. Not even rainbow ones.

Blech!

What's the one thing that you despise doing in the kitchen? I loathe wiping down the kitchen table. There's just something about all the little pieces of crusty or wet food pieces I have to wipe up. It really grosses me out. That's what my husband is for. To clean up after dinner and wipe down that table. I cook...he cleans up the things I don't want to.

What about you? There must be something in the kitchen you hate to do! What is it?

P.S. Just asked hubby to go wipe down the table. "Anything for you dear" was his response. That's what I like to hear. =)

Cupcake Cakes

Want to make some cool Halloween cakes for your kid's class or that Halloween party you're invited to? Make a cupcake cake! They will wow the teacher or party host for sure!

  • Bake yourself about 30 cupcakes.
  • Get a cake board or piece of cardboard.
  • Buy or make some frosting in the colors you need.
  • Arrange the cupcakes in the shape of what you want to do. I've done a pumpkin, skull and a ghost. (the ghost is pretty easy for a beginner!)
  • Once you get the shape you want, take some frosting and "glue" down some of the cupcakes on the outer edges. This helps keep them from sliding.
  • Now...frost across all the cupcakes like you're frosting a regular cake! Might be a little tricky at first but once you get the first coat down, you're good to go!
  • Once you get them all frosted, do the design of choice on the top to finish it off!
The great thing about cupcake cakes is that there's no cutting pieces and they are easy to eat!

PS. If you make one, send me a picture of it...I'd love to see it!

Where's the switch?

So I can keep it off!

Seriously...I think Mr. Lucas has a on/off switch for his "terrible two's". I don't want to jinx anything but...he's been really great lately. No huge tantrums, going to bed very good for the most part and he's got some great manners all of the sudden. His little personality is coming through and it makes dh and I laugh all the time. And today he said "I missed you" when I picked him up from care. Awwwww....

This. is. good.

And a book to be read, nightly in the bed

One of Lucas' favorite bedtime books is "Goodnight Moon". He almost knows it by heart now. I was at Borders last week browsing the kids books and they had all sorts of Halloween books out. One of the books that caught my eye was "Goodnight Goon". I flipped through it and knew Lucas would love it! I was right...it's a must read every night now and "Goodnight Moon" has disappeared from the nightly reading for the time being. After a week of reading it, he almost knows this one by heart too...and it's so darn cute to hear him saying it aloud.

So if you have a little one...check it out....I'm sure he/she will like it!

Dinnertime blues

Got a great gagging show from EJ tonight at dinner. I made homemade hamburgers with beefy onion soup mix in them. Nothing strong tasting. EJ took a bite of them, made a face and did the gagging-I'm-gonna-puke and went running to the bathroom (even though the trash was 4 feet behind him). Came out and said they were gross and wanted something else to eat. Normally, if I know the kids don't like something I'm making for dinner, I *might* let them make a sandwich or have a bowl of cereal. But not tonight because EJ started early with the "can I have a hot dog?" or "can I have some ham?" before dinner was even ready. So I suspect that gagging stunt was just to get him something else to eat. Didn't fly tonight though.

Do you let the kids have something else for dinner if they don't like what you make?

The doctor would think I'm nuts!

Ok, I love Olay products....I use their moisturizers and cleaners daily. I just bought their Touch of Foundation UV Defense regenerating moisturizer. I love the fact that there's some foundation in it as well as an spf. As I was reaching for it this morning I noticed this little tidbit on the back: "Apply evenly on clean face as needed. Children under six months of age: consult a doctor" Um, what? Like I would ever think to put something like this on a baby. Or a child period. And what do you think my kids pediatrician would say if I came in and said "Is it ok to put this on my child?" I think labeling has gotten a little insane.

We're back!

We got back from our last camping trip of the season....and our first use of the new camper! We had a great time and it's so nice to have all the room & storage in the new camper! We went to Tamworth Camping Area in New Hampshire. The campground was bare bones but nice. Great wooded sites and next time, we'll try and get a river front site! We visited the Sandwich Fair on Saturday and then did a Gondola Ride up to the top of Wildcat Mountain. There was a letterbox up there to find too! We went with two other families and all the kids got along wonderfully! So sad the camping season is over but we've decided we're booking a bunch of trips early next spring for the season so we do more camping than we did this year!Do you camp? Tent or camper?

Where's the maid when you need her?

When family is coming by on short notice, I do the "usual" Mommay cleaning job: vacuum the house, pick up the mounds and mounds of crap that accumulates around here and throw away a barrel full of trash. I leave some tell tale signs that I didn't just pick up the house: a few kids toys, a pile of papers on the island, an empty box and some groceries to be put away. Yea, kinda defeats the "cleaning" purpose right? Well, I don't want said guests to "know" I just ran around like a mad woman cleaning up this hell hole! In my little mind, I figure if there's still some "stuff" laying around, it will look like my house in generally clean, right? Am I twisted?
In reality, my house is a mess. Always. Admittedly, I'm not a good housekeeper and come on, I have three children! Even if I did always clean my house daily, you'd never know it by the end of the day after the kids have gotten to it. I really try to break it up and do things each day but like I said Mommay=not a good cleaner. What about you? How clean is your house on a daily basis? Would you pass the white glove treatment? Or do you go for the "lived in" look like we do?

Oh and please don't show up at my house unannounced.

Works For Me Wednesday 10.8.08

Remember my post about how much of a slob I am? Well, I think I found something to help save my stained clothes! When I was at Michaels Craft store the other day, I found a bottle of Grandma's Secret Spot Remover. I thought "what the heck!" and bought a bottle. I used it on a few shirts that had some oil stains that never would come out. Guess what? They're GONE! Yeah! There were a lot of you that seemed to have the same problem, so I thought I'd share the good news! I think a bottle of it was only about $4.00. That's what Works for Me today! I ♥ Twitter

Wow...tagged by two fellow twits, um, twitterers, um tweeters---Whatever---in one day! I guess I should follow through because @Rachel-L and @integratedmom are my bff's on twitter (they don't know that yet though...shhhhh)

Ok here goes...6 things my twitter pals don't know about me.

  1. I'm a nail biter. It's awful. I have little teeny, tiny stubs of nails. These nails do not see polish ever. Because it would just look plain silly.
  2. I don't like kids. Well, that's a bit harsh. How about "I love my own kids but can't tolerate other's kids really". My friend's kids do grow on me but it takes awhile. Is that bad?
  3. I won a blue ribbon on my "purple kitty on yellow chair" drawing when I was in Junior High. It's hanging in my daughters room now.
  4. I don't like dogs. I'm a total cat person. If I'm *forced* to pet a dog, I obsess over getting my hands washed because I don't want to smell like dog. yuk.
  5. I'm a meat and potatoes girl. I could eat most any meat and any type of potato every night for the rest of my life and I'd be a happy girl.
  6. I hate water on my face. I rarely go underwater. If I get water on my face in the shower, I must dry it off immediately. (and my daughter is just like me!)
So there you have it. Is your night more fulfilled for knowing this stuff about mamamulla? Don't go clicking over to Twitter and block or unfollow me now because you don't like my answers. Don't do it. I'm watching you!

The Rules: Now, if you’ve been tagged with the meme game from Twitter, you must post 6 things no one knows about you on your blog. Then you have to tag 6 more people - don’t forget to let them know they’ve been tagged. Leave me a comment letting me know that you’ve accepted the tag. Let me know when you’ve posted your list and make sure there’s a link back to my blog. Have fun!!!

Banner Rotator...

...or "cool flashing pictures on the side of your blog". A few people have written to me to ask how I get the blog ads to rotate on my side bar under the "Must Reads" heading. It's pretty simple: It's a javascript banner rotator. You can use the generator for FREE at the link posted. It's easy to get it on your blog and here's how to do it:

  1. Specify the speed. I use 3 seconds for mine.
  2. How do you want the ads to refresh? I use "automatically refresh image" so it shows the different ones constantly.
  3. For Where do you want the page to open, I choose to new blank page so my blog doesn't get closed out and lose the traffic.
  4. Specify the image width. My buttons are 125x125 square.
  5. Choose the banner rotator number. Good if you have a few of these on your page...make them different numbers.
  6. Now you put in the url to the blog or website you are linking next to url for link(1).
  7. Then find their banner url by right clicking and copying the properties or choose "copy image location" and paste that next to "url of image".
  8. For "alt text" you put the blog or website's name if you choose.
  9. Click Generate and a new page will open with the coding you need.
  10. Highlight all the code and copy it.
  11. Paste it on your blog in a new html/javacript widget/gadget. (I use blogger so that's the only way I know how to install it)
That's it! I love having the banner rotator to keep my sidebars neat & tidy (ha ha...if that were only really true!) without all my favorite blogs spanning way down my blog. Let me know if this helps you out!

Friday Fragments #2

And for today....

Friday Fragments?
  1. I think I would pass out if this happened to me (thanks Amy!)
  2. I went up .2 pounds this week at Weight Watchers. WTF? It's making me workout every day no matter what...so I guess it's a good thing. I want to have my 10lb star by Christmas (preferable sooner)!!
  3. My pool is getting closed today. It's a sad day because summer is officially over. (and you'd think I'd realize that with temps being in the 60's all week!)
  4. My 8yo needs to write his birthday Thank you's. Mommay hasn't made him do it. He keeps putting it off.
  5. I can't wait to go camping over the long weekend. I wonder if the place has wi-fi? I'll be having withdrawals if it doesn't!
  6. Nights in Rodanthe is a total chick flick. And you'll cry.
  7. I think I'm going to update my Fannie Farmer cookbook. The one I have now is a small, small paperback and I need a bigger one. It's my favorite one with down to earth "regular" recipes. I also think I'll get a kids cookbook too.
  8. I'm gonna ask Santa for an ipod. I have a mp3 player and the screen died on it. It plays music but I can't choose it! I need my music when I go walking...especially if I go alone.
  9. Why does my kitchen island clutter up so darn fast? The little paper fairies appear at night and put stuff there. Really, they do!
  10. And lastly...Some show the other day was saying we should be talking to our kids about sex at age 8. EIGHT? Really? WTF? Guess it's time to get some books for my son?

Tiny Prints Winner!

A big ol CONGRATS to Jennifer for winning the Tiny Prints $50 Gift Certificate! This is her favorite holiday card:

I can't wait to see a pic of your holiday card when you create it! Woo hoo Jennifer! (and see...doing all that work really paid off this time!)

12 Weeks til Christmas???

While at my Weight Watchers meeting this week, the leader mentioned that there's 12 weeks til Christmas. Yes, TWELVE weeks! That seems so darn close! I've started buying a few things but really need the kids to give me some ideas before I buy for them. Santa brings them each 3 gifts and mommay & daddy give a few as well. Have you started shopping yet? When do you usually start? Have your kids mentioned any "must haves" yet? Or are you just going to ignore this post and pretend I didn't mention it? =)
